Earthlink Wants Total Access (to Your PC)
Columnist Robert X. Cringely warns about Earthlink's popup stopper -- and the new "version" of it which is basically a trojan -- a program that can take over your computer. Their privacy policy does not promise not to send information on your surfing habits and what's on your computer, and the material they post about the program itself claims that it can install other programs on your computer when it wants to. It will replace your FTP, email and browser. Your old email files will be trashed, and your favorites (bookmarks) may be unusable.
Yikes! What WERE they thinking? And what would WE be thinking if we install this on our computers?
(When I want pop-ups stopped, I use Netcaptor for my browser. It's a version of Internet Explorer, with tabbed windows within one main windows. And it can stop pop-up ads: http://www.netcaptor.com)
